Get to Know Our Caring Team

A proud father of four and former elite athlete, Dr. Darrin understands firsthand the stressors that affect your body's ability to heal itself as it was designed to. He earned his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Northwestern Health Sciences University in Bloomington, Minnesota, and then returned to his hometown of Winnipeg and opened our practice with his wife, registered massage therapist Tempest Thorvaldson.

Dr. Nick Simoes has been part of our n8 Chiropractic & Massage Therapyy team since we opened our doors in 2016. Like Dr. Darrin, he received his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Northwestern Health Sciences University. Along with caring for our practice members, he is a public speaker and a trainer for the Manitoba Tourism Education Council.

Dr. Kim Barton has been a chiropractic patient since childhood and is passionate about caring for families. A Northwestern Health Sciences University graduate, she has advanced training in the Torque Release Technique, a low-force, gentle adjusting method.

Our massage therapy team comprises RMTs Tempest Thorvaldson and Kimberly Nyberg. They have decades of experience and offer various massage techniques, including pregnancy and infant massage.

Will I need a referral from a Medical Doctor for injury care in Winnipeg?

No referral is required to see a Chiropractor in all of Manitoba. In fact, if you've been involved in a car accident or sustained a workplace injury, you can directly visit a chiropractor as your first point of contact for your MPI or WCB claim.

Will my insurance cover chiropractic care?

Most extended health care plans in Manitoba include coverage for chiropractic care. Additionally, many people are unaware that Manitoba Health also offers partial coverage for chiropractic services. Moreover, chiropractic care is fully covered by Manitoba Public Insurance and the Worker's Compensation Board. If you would like more information, please call our office. What should I expect during my first chiropractic visit at n8?

In our office, we prepare for your first visit by sending you paperwork to complete beforehand, allowing your doctor to review it and get ready for your appointment. During your visit, the doctor will conduct a thorough consultation and a detailed examination, which includes neurologic computerized scans. If necessary, you may be referred out for x-rays. Following your initial visit, we'll schedule a follow-up appointment to provide a detailed explanation of your exam results and outline a clear action plan to help you achieve your health goals.

What is an adjustment?

An adjustment is a therapeutic procedure performed by chiropractors to correct misalignments in the spine and other joints, known as "subluxations." The primary goal is to restore neurological integrity in the nervous system by achieving proper alignment and improving joint function. Does a Chiropractic adjustment hurt?

Most people feel better and experience relief after their adjustment. However, some may experience mild soreness, similar to post-workout discomfort. Even gentle, tonal-based adjustments like those at N8 can occasionally lead to this response during healing. To alleviate any discomfort, consider drinking more water, icing the area, and doing gentle stretches as your body adjusts to the healing process.

Is chiropractic care safe during pregnancy and for children?

Yes. Chiropractic is safe during pregnancy. At N8, we start seeing many pregnant moms in their first trimester and work with them all the way through. Chiropractic care is extremely beneficial to help set up mom's spine and pelvis for labour and delivery. Yes. Chiropractic care is safe for children. Some of our Doctors at N8 have taken a multitude of additional pediatric training courses to safely and effectively help children grow up strong and healthy with chiropractic care. Most pediatric chiropractors learn gentle chiropractic adjustment techniques to work on kids of all ages from infants to teens and beyond.

How many visits will I need?

The number of visits required to address a chiropractic problem can vary widely depending on several factors, including nature and severity of the condition, individual patient factors, treatment goals, response to treatment and chiropractic approach. Typically, patients might expect to see improvements within the first few visits, but a comprehensive plan may involve more care. And some choose to benefit from ongoing wellness care.
