Sciatica is a Label, Not a Reason

Sciatica describes irritation of the sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in your body. It runs from your low back, deep beneath the piriformis muscle in your buttock, and down the back of your leg. Pressure anywhere along that path shows up as leg pain.

Sciatica tells us what you’re feeling, not why it’s happening. Dr. Darrin Thorvaldson, D.C., starts every case with that second question, because finding the why gives you a much better shot at changing the what.

Where the Pressure on the Nerve Comes From

Sciatica can start in several places, and each one shapes your plan differently. Common sources include:

  • A herniated or bulging disc pressing on a nerve root
  • Misalignment in the pelvis or sacroiliac (SI) joints
  • A tight piriformis muscle clamping down on the nerve
  • Degenerative changes or spinal stenosis
  • A weak core after months of sitting, followed by a sudden burst of activity

The Pain That Follows a Path

Most people describe a sharp, burning, or electric pain that travels from the low back or buttock down one leg. Some also feel numbness, tingling, or “pins and needles” in the calf or foot.

Where the pain stops can offer a clue. When it rarely travels much past the knee, the piriformis muscle is often involved. Pain that reaches the foot may point higher up, toward the spine.

When Working Around It Stops Working

If leg pain has lasted more than a couple of weeks, keeps returning after physio or massage, or is changing how you sit, sleep, or move, it’s time for a closer look. Sudden leg weakness or changes in bladder or bowel control need emergency medical attention right away.

Nerve Scans, the Pelvis, and a Calmer Nervous System

After a detailed conversation and exam, Dr. Darrin uses Insight neurological scans to see how your nervous system is functioning in real time, including muscle stress patterns along your spine.

Care often centres on the pelvis, since it’s the foundation your low back sits on. Options include traditional adjustments, gentle instrument adjusting, and NetworkSpinal care, which aims to ease spinal tension and calm your stress response. Learn more about our chiropractic care.

You’ll also go home with stretches matched to the cause, since a disc issue calls for a different routine than a tight piriformis.

Breaking the Spring Flare-Up Cycle

Plenty of people spend a long winter sitting, then get hurt the moment they jump into yard work or summer sports. The real culprit is hidden weakness built up over months of inactivity.

The goal goes beyond easing leg pain. It’s helping your nerves, joints, and muscles work together so your exercises actually do their job, and you’re better prepared when the seasons change.
